Sleep for Peace 2019

SLEEP FOR PEACE CAMPAIGN BY HOSTELLING INTERNATIONAL

We believe that exploration and travel lead to a better understanding of other cultures, contributing to the creation of a more peaceful, smarter and more tolerant world. We promote tolerance and peace by celebrating the UN International Peace Day through our "Sleep for Peace" campaign. This campaign was originally set up by the USA Youth Hostels Association in 2013 to highlight the important role played by hostels in promoting cultural diversity and promoting intercultural exchanges that can lead to global dialogue. The idea was adopted by Hostelling International in 2015, since then it has spread to hostels in over 32 countries and has received support from the UNWTO. The hostels of the HI network offer safe and quality environments, ideal for aggregating young people and creating relationships that can last a lifetime. Participating hostels host events that promote the importance of travel as a tool of knowledge and tolerance on a global level.

THE OBJECTIVES:

1) Involve guests, local communities, volunteers and members in meetings, events and reflections on peace building and intercultural understanding.

2) Highlight the role of HI network hostels as safe places where cultures meet.

3) Celebrate youth diversity, tolerance and tourism in the Hostelling International movement.

4) Obtain support from international organizations involved in peace building, to improve the impact and dissemination of our shared values.

In this edition of 2019, the campaign launched by HI wants to give importance to the beautiful cultural diversity that distinguishes our network.

The initiative therefore starts on 21 May 2019 (World Cultural Diversity Day for Dialogue and Development promoted by the UN), the date on which all participating National Associations will publish, in their own language, a video with which they declare their intention to participate to the Sleep for Peace 2019 campaign. This year's edition requires that each participating Association be combined with another one with which it will exchange a "Culture Box", a box containing from 5 to 10 elements that represent culture, language, traditions or other peculiarities of the country. The contents of the "Culture Boxes" will be revealed on 21 September 2019, the International Day of Peace promoted by the United Nations (https://www.un.org/en/events/peaceday), during events that will be organized in each country.

On that day, the hostels of the HI network around the world will synchronize the celebratory efforts, gathering around a single message and personalizing it, reflecting the uniqueness of each place and the role of each hostel.

All events and initiatives will be disseminated through the social channels of each Association with the hashtag #SleepforPeace.

Over the years we have seen a variety of activities all creative, engaging and fun. This initiative is supported by the UNWTO and has always grown over the years, involving an increasing number of structures.

The 2018 edition saw our Italian Youth Hotels Association among the protagonists of the event, in fact a girl who collaborates with our Association at the Ostello Diffuso of Ugento , participated and won the competition organized by HI for the Sleep for Peace campaign by creating a handmade necklace that reproduces the symbol of S4P, which we see here worn by the former International President Edith Arnoult.

The young woman made the necklace available so that it could be auctioned, donating the proceeds to a child who was left an orphan following the tsunami in Indonesia.

"Every time we travel, we break all the stereotypes and all the doubts. [...] And it opens the way to dialogue, mutual understanding and tolerance. These are all cornerstones of a culture of peace and security"  Taleb Rifai, former UNWTO secretary general

Whoever you are, wherever you come from, you are invited to share and celebrate #SleepforPeace with us!
